Short Sentences
Writers, editors and proofreaders should not be afraid of short sentences. They can be effective. They convey meaning directly. They carry no fat.
Fear of the short sentence is sometimes a sign that a writer or editor has not read widely. The belief that writing long, convoluted sentences is a mark of learning or erudition is misplaced. We should write with the principal aim of clarity. Sometimes this is achieved with a long sentence, structured well with clearly related subordinate clauses. On other occasions a series of short sentences works more clearly.
Editors and proofreaders should never try to alter an author’s style or “voice”. If a writer enjoys short sentences so be it. If he or she is long-winded a little trimming may be possible, but never at the expense of an author’s stamp or personality.
