Skilled Employee
A journeyman wss a skilled worker who was in employment, not a self-employed tradesman.
It now means someone who is competent at what he does but not necessarily skilled. It is not pejorative like jack of all trades, however. You might confidently use a journeyman, but not a jack of all trades who is master of none.
Day’s Work
Originally, a journeyman was employed to do a day’s work (jour), but this meaning disappeared long ago. Interestingly, a journey was a day’s travel, but now can be of any length.
