pretty friableToday’s small, simple, but deceptive word is friable.

It does not mean a piece of streaky bacon or a sausage, something you put in a pan with a little fat.

Rather, it means something which crumbles easily. A digestive biscuit. a piece of sandstone, granular soil; all these are easy to crumble and therefore friable. Gardeners like to work in friable ground.

The word comes from Latin friare which means (you guessed) to crumble.

So, if you are editing or proofreading don’t be tempted to think the author has made a mistake in using this tricky little word, unless, of course, she is describing an onion when the word would be fryable, if it exists? Please check; does it?
