Today’s word for editors, proofreaders, authors and anyone interested in words is cupidity.
Cupidity is greed or strong desire for money or possessions. Greed for food would be gluttony. Its use is becoming uncommon, which is a shame. It comes from the Latin word cupiditas. Cupere is to desire in Latin.
“John’s cupidity will be his downfall; he’ll end up in jail.”
Most editors and proofreaders don’t suffer from cupidity. They leave it to bankers.
