EDITORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Copy-editors and proofreaders worry far too much about these differences. Children are often taught that from is correct and that to and than are simply wrong and illiterate. Not true. All forms have been used for centuries both in the UK and US. There is no right or wrong about their usage. Than may be the oldest use, which might come as a surprise. If you are wedded to from that’s fine, of course. But when you are proofreading or copy-editing leave the author’s choice alone. Please don’t tinker.

Than is popular in the US, but remember that American English is more traditionally based than British English and Americans are more likely to follow the usages that the Pilgrim Fathers took with them. In Britain the language has changed far more in the last few hundred years. Vive la…
